Marcelo Yannuzzi

Business Success

Bio

Marcelo is part of Cisco's innovation arm, Outshift, where he is leading the design and development of novel zero-trust technologies for securing autonomous AI applications. His work covers identity and semantic-based access control to tools and enterprise data as well as novel products enabling tailored visibility into how AI accesses and uses sensitive enterprise data. Marcelo has developed novel access control mechanisms to counter against what he calls "scope-breaking" techniques as well as new Multi-Factor Verification (MFV) methods for agentic AI with and without a human in the loop.

Marcelo has a Ph.D. in Computer Science, an Electrical Engineering degree in electronics, and deep hands-on experience in security and networking, thanks to his work at the largest Telco in Uruguay (A.N.TEL), where he contributed to design, operate, and secure the largest network infrastructure in the country.

Before joining Cisco's innovation arm, he was part of Cisco's corporate strategy, where he learned and gained substantial knowledge on how to turn innovation into profitable business. Prior to joining Cisco, he was a Computer Science professor and led a research lab at the Department of Computer Architecture, Technical University of Catalunya, in Barcelona, Spain. He was also an assistant professor both at the Physics Department and the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of the Republic (UdelaR), Uruguay.

Marcelo lives in Switzerland with his most precious asset: his wife and their three amazing children.

Zero-Trust in Agentic AI Systems

The autonomy and speed at which agentic systems can operate poses new challenges and risks. Agentic AI is not automation as we know it. It is disrupting IAM systems and making evident that current zero-trust and delegated authorization methods are broken under agentic AI. For instance, there is a complete disconnect between the intended tasks commissioned to an agent and the intents indirectly conveyed by the agent to Auth Servers. Indeed, access control, MFA, access grants, and refresh token policies they all need to be rethought. Marcelo is leading the design and architecture of new zero-trust solutions for agentic AI systems, including new posture assessment techniques enabling not only novel access controls but also a new breed of AI-powered Auth Servers. The signals collected and inspected include:

  • The input prompts received by the agents
  • Function call related exchanges with xLMs
  • Exchanges with tool servers and protected resources
  • Exchanges with other agents
  • Exchanges with new Auth Servers that are part of the innovation

About us

Identity & Access Control in Agentic AI

Just as humans rely on official identification for trusted interactions, such as passports or driver's licenses, AI agents and MCP Servers require verifiable credentials to authenticate their identity and build trust. AGNTCY's Identity work is seminal in this space, and has provided the first open-source reference implementation of identity services focused on agentic AI systems. Marcelo is co-leading the Identity Working Group (WG) within AGNTCY, which has amalgamated identities for agents and MCP servers issued by major IdPs (e.g., Okta, Microsoft Entra, Duo, Keycloak, Ping, and Ory), as well as Verifiable Credentials taking inspiration from W3C VCs. Main features accessible through the AGNTCY repo:

  • Register and connect your own IdP
  • Register agentic services and create identity badges (VCs), including AGNTCY specs and automation for A2A agents and MCP Servers
  • Publish, search, and verify identity badges
  • Device onboarding and MFA
  • Policy config including Task/Tool-Based Access Control (TBAC), with or without human approval

About us

Glueing AI, Data, and IAM On Premise

Many companies maintain a significant part of their data at the edge (e.g., on premise, on private data centers, or colocation). This might be due to compliance restrictions (e.g., data sovereignty legislation), industry-specific requirements and regulations as well as corporate directives. In addition, several companies are repatriating workloads from public clouds either to reduce cost or ensure that sensitive data remains under their control. This poses restrictions on data location, data access, and data processing, forcing AI to move to the data instead of the data to AI.

A new inference software architecture and stack was developed for Cisco AI servers securely glueing identity, language models, enterprise data, applications, and agents locally at the edge. This encompasses features such as: (a) endowing agents and users with different super-powers while accessing corporate data depending on their identity (e.g., different users have different access to local data even through the same chat interface); (b) onboard, connect, and link identity to local data sources with a few clicks (via MCP, data connectors, OpenAPIs, etc.); (c) Bring Your Own Functions (BYOFs) capability; (d) multi-modal use cases (text and images).

About us

Prompt Processing Units (PPUs)

PPUs are highly efficient processing elements that receive a prompt as an input and characterize such prompts at inference time by detecting and distilling a set of features, including:

  • The class of tasks requested to an LLM and/or agent (e.g., "Coding Support")
  • The specific tasks requested within a class of task, such as "create a python program"
  • The data required (if any) to complete such tasks (e.g., a snippet of python code)
  • Constraints that may apply for completing the requested tasks (e.g., "use the code snippet provided", or "stick to NumPy")
  • The desired output upon completion of such tasks (e.g., "stdout")
PPUs operate as transparent elements receiving prompts as an input and delivering metadata carrying the features above listed in real-time. PPUs have application in security, observability, compliance, productivity assessment, etc.

  1. Path-State Graph Overlays on BGP
Author: Marcelo Yannuzzi and Rene Serral-Gracia
    Publication date: April, 2011
Language and no. of Pages: English, 69 pages
Link to the Work: Path-State Graphs: Therory and Protocols
I created Path-State Graphs (PSGs) and developed the theory behind them. Jointly with my colleague Rene Serral-Gracia, we developed a new control protocol for the inter-domain routing system using PSGs called Path-State Protocol (PSP). We designed it as an overlay on top of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to help improving its performance and security in a non-disruptive way. The key strength of PSGs is that they capture the interconnections between Autonomous Systems (ASs), while respecting the opaqueness of providers (i.e., ISPs can hide their inter-domain connectivity according to the usual routing policies between domains). This research was conducted for Cisco Systems while I was a professor at the Department of Computer Architecture, Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain.
